Campbell began rowing in 2004 as a novice athlete at Hobart College in Geneva NY. Coming from a background in long distance running and competitive sailing he quickly found success as an oarsman. in 2007 Campbell transferred to Oregon State University where he competed with the varsity rowing team and raced in 2 IRA National Championship regattas placing 11th in 2008 in the 2V8 and 15th in 2009 with in the V8.

Campbell found his way to coaching at an early age coaching his youth sailing team in Cazenovia NY beginning in 2003 and continuing to coach in that sport through his collegiate years eventually taking a post as the sailing director at the US Sailing Center of Martin County in Jensen Beach FL in 2009. In his time with the sport Campbell managed programs as large as 120 athletes ranging in age from 8 to 18 and directed a staff of 8-10 coaches.

In 2010 Campbell returned to the Northeast taking a position as the Sales Manager at Landfall Navigation, one of the nations leading marine equipment and safety outfitters. Simultaneously he took the position of Varsity Men’s Rowing Coach at Fairfield University in Fairfield CT. At Fairfield Campbell helped to dramatically improve team performance and grow the team, doubling in size every season from a varsity pair in 2011 to two full varsity eights in 2015. Campbell earned MAAC Conference Men’s Rowing Coach of the Year honors twice for his accomplishments

In the fall of 2015 Campbell took the next step in his coaching career moving to Poughkeepsie NY to take the helm of the Marist College Men’s Rowing Team. Marist showed immediate benefits from working with Coach Woods quickly rising from a 65th power ranking in 2016 to 21st in 2018 and returning the Varsity Eight that year to the IRA National Championship Regatta for the first time in over a decade. In the years since then, Marist has continued to be a national competitor placing in the top 5 at the Head of the Charles Regatta every year since 2017 and ranking in the top 20 crews in the nation on 5 separate occasions. Campbell has also shown considerable success at Marist in recruiting, alumni fund raising and fleet/equipment management. Campbell earned his MBA from Marist College in 2018, he was the Head Coach at the Hudson River Rowing Association from 2018-19 and left HRRA in 2019 to start Momentum Rowing and Nelo Rowing North America. Honoring these accomplishments, Campbell earned the James Joy “Joy of Sculling” Conference Collegiate Coach of the Year Honors in 2018 as well as MAAC Conference Coach of the Year in 2016.

Campbell continues to thrive as a coach in the rowing community, with his athletes showing consistent improvement throughout their careers and many going on to become successful masters athletes and coaches in their own right. He has a clear talent for building fast crews. He uses a holistic and marginal gains approach to coaching rowing that seeks to improve athletes in small ways in all categories of their approach and performance each day. In addition, his technical background in boat and equipment sales and manufacturing outlines a special talent for optimizing biomechanical systems to enhance performance

Campbell holds a BS in Exercise Physiology and Sports Management from Oregon State University and an MBA in Ethical Business Management from Marist College.
